MindCotine is a virtual reality and mindfulness program that can assist you in giving up smoking in real life.
The mobile app provides an attractively priced and user-friendly set of immersive experiences, which will help you stop craving a cigarette as you find the skills required to confront this hard process. Non-smokers can also join our community and support others with their challenge. The program does not require tech-savviness. Upon receiving your kit, download the included app from the Play Store or App Store, and fill in a brief questionnaire to establish your addiction level and start customizing your program.
The program requires a cardboard headset, cellphone and twenty minutes of your time every day. The daily cycle consists of ten minutes of VR and mindfulness to wake up and gain awareness, followed by another ten minutes of VR, motivation and self-training. Each cycle lasts a fortnight, and you will work on something different everyday while following the same routine.
MindCotine combines technologies and techniques that have been successful in treating different conditions and disorders. The program was concocted by three old friends, each with their own expertise. Cristian Waitman is a VR and digital media professional, and one of the main engines behind the Coral Restoration Project, a social innovation program to encourage individuals and the Government of Mexico to participate in the protection and restoration of the Coral Mexican Reef. Biomedical Engineer Nicolas Rosencovich has participated in a binding project between universities UNAM, in Mexico City, and UNC, in Cordoba, to develop a treatment for phobias in Virtual Reality (VRET).
Emilio Goldenhersch will soon be a qualified organizational psychologist. He is currently working on Fractal Psychology research, a clinical approach developed to holistically map the makeup of a person’s bodily emotional character, by combining psychoneuroimmunology, bioenergetics, psychogenealogy and other fields. These three musketeers have developed a program to quit smoking that includes VR, mindfulness and biofeedback. A fragment of the Cue Exposure Therapy demo explains how it feels to smoke, even when you are not. You can experience what smoking feels like, without really doing it.
Community has your back
Virtual Reality is a simulated environment of immersive experiences, which has been effectively used by therapists for more than two decades in fear control in controlled environments, to successfully overcome phobias. It has also been used in the clinical assessment and treatment of depression, anxiety, PTSD, and insomnia. Mindfulness is all about being in the here and now. How does it feel to smoke right now? And now? Breath in and out, focus on your breathing and you are engaging in mindfulness. Biofeedback; when you are in the immersive experience, we’ll ask you to put your finger on your phone’s sensor, and merge with your avatar. Your heart rate and voice tone will reveal your response to the program, and your next required content.
And always remember: you do not have to quit alone! MindCotine will set you up with a mentor who has already quit, and you can also select people you know for further support. You will be part of a community of kindred spirits, all undergoing the same process. Help each other to beat this addiction that kills six million people every year. More than half of the required 18,000 dollars for the program has already been pledged on Kickstarter.
